Those Final Moments

It's a strange way to know someone; so intimate. Yet you'll never hear their voice, and their eyes will never meet your gaze.

You care for them in the most tender of ways; hoping somehow that despite the sedatives they'll know you're there... hoping that your energy will reach them.

You hope that when their family asks you to tell them one last time that they love them, that somehow your presence will bring them the comfort their family is not permitted to bring.

And somehow there you stand... the last person.

To see their last breath, to be with them as they transition to the great unknown. And you hope you're worthy... worthy of the trust they had no choice but to put in you.
